What is a deep bite?

A deep bite is a severe overbite. This type of malocclusion is characterised by the upper front teeth excessively overlapping the lower front teeth, and it’s more than just an aesthetic concern.

Deep Bite Problems

Significant enough tooth overlap can cause the upper teeth to bite into the lower gums, and the lower teeth to harm the roof of the mouth, leaving painful abrasions and cuts. Other possible oral health complications include:

  • Enamel wear on the lower teeth, leading to loss of tooth structure
  • Fractured teeth
  • Gum recession
  • Gum irritation
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Jaw joint (TMJ) disorders
  • Chewing difficulties
  • Speech issues
  • Headaches
  • Tooth decay and gum disease, as teeth cleaning is hard to maintain effectively

How Much Does Deep Bite Correction Typically Cost?

Deep bite treatment cost depends on the severity of the malocclusion and the treatment type or types we advise to rectify it.

Milder cases can be more affordable and faster to resolve, while deeper bites can cost more and take longer to correct.

Here at Kai Dental, we offer a selection of finance options or payment plans that patients can use to separate fees into smaller, monthly chunks – removing barriers that might stop them from accessing treatment.

For a quote for deep bite treatment in London, we recommend booking a consultation today – we’ll do all we can to find a convenient appointment time that works for you.

Deep Bite

Deep bite correction

At Kai Dental, we offer an array of orthodontic deep bite treatments London residents can consider to correct deep bites.

Treatments may include dental appliances such as orthodontic braces, like traditional metal braces and tooth-coloured ceramic braces. Clear aligner systems, such as Invisalign and Angel Aligners, are popular, discreet alternatives.

Tooth removal may be required if you have crowded teeth. In severe cases, jaw or orthognathic surgery may be needed to correct a deep overbite.

When you visit our dental facility, your orthodontist, Dr Jeet Parekh (GDC number: 211256), will complete a physical examination of your mouth and may take X-rays to see how your teeth align. Then, we’ll recommend a solution depending on the severity of your alignment.

Our dental experts have the expertise and experience to identify the best course of action for restoring balance and bringing harmony to your bite and smile. Book an appointment at our W2 surgery to see how we can help you achieve healthy bite alignment.

Causes of a deep bite

Misalignment of the upper and lower teeth can happen for numerous reasons.

  • While largely a result of genetics, not having enough space in your mouth when your permanent teeth come through, or having a small jaw, may contribute to the development of a deep bite.
  • External factors such as unregulated childhood habits, like nail-biting, pencil biting, thumb-sucking, or even tongue thrusting, can exacerbate its development.
  • General wear and tear over time, coupled with teeth grinding, can also contribute to the progression of a deep bite.

Simultaneously, if the lower teeth may harm the roof of the mouth, this can lead to other concerns like increased tooth sensitivity, wear on the lower teeth, or even TMJ disorders.

FAQs

Are deep bites normal?

Everyone has an overbite to some degree. A normal overbite is when there’s only a slight upper tooth overlap, typically between 1 and 2mm. Severe cases that require overbite treatment are when the top teeth cover over 50% of the lower teeth.

If you’re concerned that you have a deep bite, get in touch with Kai Dental today, and we’ll schedule a consultation. Our professional dentists will check your bite and help you make an informed decision on your next steps.

Can Invisalign treat a deep bite?

It is perfectly plausible to treat mild to moderate deep bites with Invisalign by intruding the front teeth, extruding the back teeth, or a combination of both.

Intrusion treatment involves gently manipulating the front teeth down into the gumline to reduce overlap, while extrusion works the opposite way, gently raising the back teeth to level the bite.

For a bespoke Invisalign treatment plan, you’ll need to schedule an orthodontic consultation at your earliest convenience.

I still have a deep bite after braces - can you help?

If you have been referred by another provider due to deep bite treatment failure, or are just unhappy with your smile at the end of your correction, the team at Kai Dental would love to speak with you and see if we can help.

If you haven’t been referred, you can either bring as much information as possible to your appointment, or we can request it from your previous dentist. Be sure to bring their details with you and give them to us when you book your visit.
