Crooked or “crowded” teeth are the most common complaint for patients attending Kai Dental, and can affect anyone, from children to teenagers and adults.
When the front teeth are crooked, it can often be very noticeable and lead people to feel self-conscious about their smile.

Causes and Presentation of Crooked Teeth
Crooked teeth can look tilted, rotated, or “wonky”, impacting both aesthetics and oral health.
Dental crowding typically occurs because of an imbalance between the size of your jaws and the size of your teeth.
Usually, this is relatively small and can be corrected with straightforward orthodontic treatment, including traditional braces with metal brackets and wires.
However, more severe cases will likely require the use of advanced orthodontic techniques in order to fix overcrowded teeth – things like Invisalign® treatment, self-ligating braces, or lingual braces.
Other causes of overlapping teeth include:
- Genetic factors – crooked teeth can be hereditary and passed on from one generation to the next.
- Bad habits – prolonged thumb sucking or use of a dummy can affect tooth alignment, particularly in children.
- Premature tooth loss – if baby teeth fall out early, the permanent teeth may grow at an angle.
- Trauma – dental trauma to the face or mouth (caused by an accident or playing contact sports) can knock teeth out of alignment.
- Hormonal issues – hormonal imbalances don’t directly cause crooked teeth, but they can shift teeth that were previously aligned.
Poor nutrition – a diet lacking calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus can affect jaw and tooth development, eventually leading to misalignment.

What Problems Can Crooked Teeth Lead To?
Uneven teeth not only negatively impact your self-esteem and confidence, but they can cause various other issues, too.
Patients attending our modern clinic often report that the area of the mouth with the most crowding is difficult to clean properly – leading to increased risks of gingivitis (gum disease) and tooth decay.
As the plaque builds up, it’s more important than ever to establish a good oral hygiene routine and to attend regular appointments with the hygienist for professional cleans.
Misaligned teeth are more susceptible to chipping, breaking, or wearing away.
Patients with overcrowded teeth may also experience difficulty speaking and chewing properly. This is because malocclusions (overbites, underbites, or crossbites) make it difficult for the tongue to move like it should, leading to slurred speech. Certain words may become more challenging to say, too – usually as a result of insufficient tongue-to-tooth contact.

How Do We Fix Crooked Teeth?
As registered orthodontic specialists, Kai Dental offers private orthodontic treatment London-wide and uses a variety of techniques to fix crowded teeth, including fixed metal braces, Invisalign aligners and Angel Aligners.
The most popular option for treating crowded teeth at Kai Dental is Invisalign®, which uses a series of clear plastic aligners to gently move your teeth into the correct position. These nearly-invisible braces typically take 12-18 months to straighten crooked teeth, but our specialist will advise on the timescales for your bespoke treatment plan during your initial consultation.
Fixed braces are also a popular option, particularly for mild teeth crowding cases. These take the same amount of time as Invisalign®, and attending regular check-ups and adjustments is key to ensuring your treatment plan stays on track.
In extreme crowded teeth cases, orthodontic treatment alone may not be enough to achieve the desired alignment.
For more technically challenging cases, we can employ complex solutions such as bone screws, the Carriere device, and tooth extractions to ensure the ideal result.
If there’s not enough space for all your teeth in your mouth, they may overlap and become crooked. However, our private orthodontist, Dr Jeet Parekh, can remove your extra teeth (usually the premolars) to create space for your remaining healthy teeth to shift into alignment with braces or other orthodontic devices.
