Causes and presentation of Open Bite
An open bite is a type of malocclusion where the top and bottom teeth do not meet when the mouth is closed. Instead of touching normally, there is a visible gap between the teeth.
Often caused by genetic factors, open bites may be the result of skeletal issues (skeletal open bite), such as irregular jaw growth, where the jaws grow apart. Individuals suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD or TMJ) may also develop open bites. Tooth position can also lead to overbite development.
These malocclusions can also be exacerbated by early childhood habits like thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting, or prolonged use of a pacifier. Excessive mouth breathing due to conditions like enlarged tonsils can also contribute to its development.
There are several types of overbite:
- Anterior open bite – This is where the front upper and lower teeth do not touch when the back teeth are fully clamped down, leaving a noticeable gap between them.
- Posterior open bite – This is when the back teeth do not meet when the front teeth bite together.

What problems can an Openbite lead to?
Beyond the immediate visual impact and aesthetic concerns, a bite problem, if left untreated, can lead to speech difficulties, resulting in lisps or other speech impediments.
They can also hamper the simple act of chewing food. Over time, open bites can lead to tooth wear and TMJ disorders, resulting in chronic jaw pain, headaches, or even earaches.

How do we fix an Openbite?
At Kai Dental, our approach is multifaceted. Depending on the severity and cause, treatment options vary. Orthodontic solutions like traditional braces or clear aligners are wearable dental devices that move the teeth gradually, shifting misaligned teeth into the correct position so they align properly.
If the open bite occurs while the adult teeth are emerging, early treatment such as habit-breaking therapies and behaviour modification can address the alignment issue.
Orthognathic surgery may be required to treat a severe open bite.
Our objective is to develop a custom treatment plan that ensures the perfect bite alignment for functional efficiency and aesthetic appeal.
