Why All-on-4?

All-on-4 dental implants offer a revolutionary solution for those with extensive tooth loss. Unlike traditional implants, which may require a separate implant for each tooth, All-on-4 uses just four implants to support an entire arch of teeth. This method often avoids the need for bone grafting, making it faster and less invasive. With All-on-4, you can receive a full set of teeth in just one day, restoring functionality and aesthetics immediately. It’s a cost-effective, durable, and long-lasting option that provides a natural-looking smile and restores your confidence.

What to Expect During Your All-On-4 Appointment

1. Initial Consultation

Your treatment begins with a thorough consultation where we will take dental scans, discuss your goals, and create a personalized treatment plan. At this stage we will also refer you for a 3D x-ray called a CBCT.

2. Implant Surgery

On the day of your surgery, any remaining teeth are extracted, and four dental implants are placed into your jaw. Two implants are positioned at the front of the jaw, and two are placed at an angle towards the back to maximize support.

3. Temporary Teeth Placement

A set of temporary teeth is attached to the implants on the same day as the surgery, allowing you to leave our clinic with a full smile. These provisional teeth will help you function while your implants heal.

4. Healing Period (Osseointegration)

Over the next few months, the implants will naturally fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. You will be able to function with your temporary teeth during this time.

5. Final Restoration

Once the healing process is complete, your temporary teeth will be replaced with a permanent, custom-made set of prosthetic teeth that will look and feel natural.

Recovery & Aftercare

Following your All-on-4 surgery, you will experience some mild discomfort and swelling for the first few days, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication. The initial recovery period usually lasts around two weeks, but full osseointegration (the process where implants fuse with the jawbone) takes about 3-6 months. During this time, it’s essential to follow a soft food diet and maintain proper oral hygiene to avoid infection. Regular dental checkups and cleanings are necessary to monitor the implants’ health.

FAQs

What makes All-on-4 different from traditional implants?

The main difference between All-on-4 and traditional implants is the number of implants used and the procedure’s efficiency. Traditional methods may require six or more implants to replace a full arch of teeth, along with bone grafting in cases of bone loss.

All-on-4 uses just four implants per arch, with the back implants angled to maximize support. This method often avoids the need for bone grafting and allows for same-day teeth, significantly reducing the overall treatment time and cost.

Am I a candidate for All-on-4 implants?

Ideal candidates for All-on-4 implants are individuals who have lost most or all of their teeth in one or both arches. It’s also suitable for people who have struggled with dentures or significant bone loss, as the procedure typically avoids the need for bone grafting.

A consultation with a dental implant specialist will include X-rays and 3D scans to assess your jawbone’s condition and determine if this treatment is right for you. Patients with certain medical conditions or insufficient bone structure may require alternative treatments.

How long does the All-on-4 procedure take?

The All-on-4 process is completed in a single day, allowing you to walk out with a functional set of temporary teeth.

The procedure typically takes around 2-3 hours per arch. However, the overall process, including healing and final restoration, can take between 3 to 6 months. During this time, your implants will fuse with the bone in a process called osseointegration.

Once this is complete, you’ll return to your dentist for the placement of your permanent, custom-made teeth.

Will I need bone grafting for All-on-4?

One of the major advantages of All-on-4 implants is that they often do not require bone grafting, even in cases of significant bone loss.

The back implants are placed at an angle to maximize the use of available bone, which eliminates the need for additional procedures like grafting.

However, in rare cases where the bone is severely compromised, your dentist might recommend some form of bone support before proceeding with the implants.

How much do All-on-4 implants cost?

The cost of All-on-4 implants varies depending on several factors, including the material of the prosthetic teeth, the complexity of the case, and the clinic you choose. On average, the procedure can range from £18,000 to £25,000 per arch.

While this may seem like a significant investment, it covers everything from implant placement to the final restoration. Many clinics offer financing options to help make the treatment more affordable.

How do I care for my All-on-4 implants?

Caring for All-on-4 implants is similar to maintaining natural teeth. Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste, and floss carefully around the implants to keep the gums healthy.

Regular dental check-ups every 3 to 6 months are also essential to monitor the implants and ensure their longevity. Avoid hard or sticky foods that could damage the prosthetics, and if you smoke, consider quitting, as smoking can affect the healing process and long-term success of the implants.

How long do All-on-4 implants last?

With proper care, All-on-4 implants can last a lifetime. The implants themselves are made of titanium, which integrates with the jawbone and becomes a permanent part of your mouth. However, the prosthetic teeth may need replacement after 10-15 years due to normal wear and tear.

Regular dental checkups at our Bayswater clinic and maintaining good oral hygiene are crucial for extending the lifespan of both the implants and the prosthetic teeth.

Can I eat normally with All-on-4 implants?

Yes, one of the key benefits of All-on-4 implants is that they restore full chewing functionality. Initially, you’ll need to stick to a soft food diet while your implants heal and integrate with your jawbone, typically for the first few months.

Once fully healed, you’ll be able to enjoy all your favorite foods without worrying about discomfort or instability, as All-on-4 implants provide the stability of natural teeth, allowing you to chew and bite with confidence.
