Fillings

Traditional metal fillings?

Most people do have fillings of one sort or another. Nowadays with the latest advancements in technology and materials there is an alternative to the traditional metal fillings. Many of us are very conscious of our smile which is why white fillings or composite fillings have become more popular.

White Fillings

White fillings have become more popular as they are more aesthetically pleasing when you smile or open your mouth. White fillings are made of a composite material which is constantly being improved. This new dental material allows your filling to be created in a shade which will perfectly match the colour of your teeth. Once your filling has been fitted it will be virtually impossible for anyone to see you have fillings.

In certain circumstances white fillings can be covered on the NHS if they are clinically appropriate. This will depend on your individual circumstances. Your dentist will be able to discuss the options available to you and will also confirm if you are eligible to have this treatment on the NHS.

Metal (Amalgam) Fillings

If you are not eligible for white fillings and would prefer a cheaper alternative, you can opt to have metal fillings. Amalgam fillings are durable and long-lasting. For back fillings especially where your teeth do the majority of the work this can be very beneficial. Metal fillings do contain mercury but to date there has not been any proven connection between amalgam fillings and medical problems.
